bowld made from recycled paper

This brilliant handmade and fair-trade bowl is made with posters that have been recycled.  Artisans form the paper into flat strips, dip them in a glue mixture and hang the strips of paper to dry. They then re-wet the strips to soften them and skilfully coil the strips of recycled posters resulting in sturdy attractive and eco-friendly bowls and other items for the home.
Not only is it earth friendly it is made by a non-profit organization that provides income generation to Vietnamese artisans

Elephant Dung Paper Stationery

Elephas Maximus is the Latin name for the Sri Lankan elephant, a sub species of the Asian elephant. It grows to a weight of up to 5 tonnes and eats on average 180kg of vegetation a day. The elephant produces 100kg of dung per day and with the discovery of the wonderful paper making qualities of this cellulose rich material  Elephant Dung Paper was born.
Elephant Paper is 100% recycled, made from Elephant Dung and Post-Consumer Waste Paper. Manufactured in Sri Lanka, a country where traditionally elephants and humans have competed over scarce land resources resulting in injury on both sides, the production of the paper directly contributes to the villager’s income linking it to the survival of the elephants.

To make this beautiful handmade paper, the dung is sun dried and then boiled in a pressurised boiler at 120° to kill any bacteria. Then it is mixed to form a pulp and dyed using salt dyes, before it is put into a mould and submerged in water. When lifted from the mould the paper is put into a press that squeezes the water out and the sheet of paper is then dried naturally in the shade. No tree is cut down to make the paper and no chemicals or acids are used in its production.

eco-friendly papers-elephant dung paper

Paper manufacturing is one of the most environmentally damaging industries in the world. The major source of raw material is obtained from trees and huge numbers of trees are harvested annually .The industrialised process of paper making also involves other environmentally destructive practices such as the use of toxic chemicals including chlorine used to make the paper brighter . There are environmentally friendlier ways of making paper, ways which do not exploit natural resources and avoid the use of toxic chemicals . One of these is by making paper using elephant dung.

Why elephant dung is a brilliant choice for paper making.

Elephants are poor digesters more than 50% of the food they eat comes out as fibrous pulp. Paper is essentially fibrous pulp.

Elephants produce over 50 kg of dung per day on average. This is sufficient for making around 115 sheets of elephant paper per day per animal.

Elephants are a nuisance for farmers in Sri Lanka because they eat crops and threaten the farmers’ livelihood the income produced by the sale of elephant dung paper makes them a far more attractive beast to local farmers and they are less likely to harm them. The income also provides capital to support sanctuaries for the elephants.

The process of creating elephant paper

The elephant dung paper making process takes approximately 13 days – 3 days for drying including sorting, boiling and disinfecting; and another 10 days to pulp, mix, press and dry the paper. It uses traditional paper making techniques and the elephant dung pulp is usually mixed with recycled paper to add strength to the final product. It follows a simple process:

Collect the elephant dung

Wash and boil

Add the colours

Sift evenly into frames

Dry the paper pulp using sunlight

Smooth the surface

Create eco-freindly journals, notebooks, cards etc

Recycled art and Township art from Africa is an example of how beautiful things can be made from renewable sources. Much of the recycled art from Africa is made from simple things that are then skillfully recycled and turned into a treasure.

There is a wide array of unique handcrafted Beaded and Wire Art that provides many creative uses. Some of the many unique gift ideas  include the following: Recycled Tin Planes, Recycled Flip Flop Sculptures, Plastic Bags and  Baskets, Recycled Metal Candle Maid with Beaded Skirt, Recycled Paper Cards, and much more.

For collectors the animals indigenous to Africa which are created from wire and beads are definitely some of the most endearing of the recycled art from Africa. The animals include zebras, hippos and even chickens

A very beautiful piece of recycled art from
Africa is the recycled metal candle maid with beaded skirt. Though this piece is a candleholder, the unique lines of this sculpture made from scrap metal are brilliant. The colorful beadwork against the rustic metal brings Africa to life with the stark contrast.

ecofriendly bags
These bags are brilliant.
Not only do they look fantastic but they are a great size and made out of old cement sacks, which means they are very strong and waterproof. Handmade by a fairtrade cooperative in Southern Bangladesh, this toiletry bag is a great way to recycle the large numbers of cement sacks that are prevalent in Bangladesh. These products are not only eco-friendly they provide people with a decent wage at the same time.

fairtrade and Handmade Gifts

These amazing recycled animals are made from rubbish!  Eastern African shores are littered with debris from as far away as China, Indonesia and Japan  The rubbish includes thousands of brightly-coloured pieces and parts of rubber thongs/flip-flops, not only does this floating pollution create an eyesore along the coastline but it endangers the fragile marine eco-system. The Flip- Flop I Was initiative by UniquEco was designed to not only clean up the environment by making products using this waste but also as a way of providing employment opportunities to the poor communities that have been hardest hit by this environmental degradation.

Now Kenyan women and children comb the shores to collect the indestructible pieces of rubber Talented artisans and sculptors in the local village glue the pieces of rubber together in multicolored patterns, then hand carve each block of rubber carefully transforming recycled waste into stunning works of art.

These ingeniously crafted eco friendly sculptures are a perfect example of how consumers can use their purchasing power to help preserve the precious marine environment while at the same time providing employment opportunities to an inspired community half a world away. These unique and exciting pieces of art make a fantastic eco-friendly gift which will be enjoyed for years to come
