These amazing
recycled animals are made from rubbish! Eastern African shores are littered with debris from as far away as China, Indonesia and Japan The rubbish includes thousands of brightly-coloured pieces and parts of rubber thongs/flip-flops, not only does this floating pollution create an eyesore along the coastline but it endangers the fragile marine eco-system.
The Flip- Flop I Was initiative by UniquEco was designed to not only clean up the environment by making products using this waste but also as a way of providing employment opportunities to the poor communities that have been hardest hit by this environmental degradation.
Now Kenyan women and children comb the shores to collect the indestructible pieces of rubber Talented artisans and sculptors in the local village glue the pieces of rubber together in multicolored patterns, then hand carve each block of rubber carefully transforming recycled waste into stunning works of art.
These ingeniously crafted
eco friendly sculptures are a perfect example of how consumers can use their purchasing power to help preserve the precious marine environment while at the same time providing employment opportunities to an inspired community half a world away. These unique and exciting pieces of art make a fantastic
eco-friendly gift which will be enjoyed for years to come
